Observations of perseverative coarticulation in lateral approximants using MRI

چکیده
Recent advances in real-time magnetic resonance imaging (rtMRI) make possible the following study of post-dorsal coarticulatory effects on lateral approximants in running speech. As the MRI is particularly well-suited for investigating pharyngeal articulations, it was capable of capturing perseverative coarticulation from a low central vowel to the immediately following syllable-initial lateral approximant. The lowered and retracted tongue body position associated with a low central vowel is articulatorily equivalent to a pharyngeal constriction [1]. We show here that rt-MRI techniques can track coarticulation direction by calculating the average pixel intensity [2] within a region of interest in MR images as a function of time.

Anticipatory Coarticulation in a Specific Context
In Hungarian casual speech, [n] may not be fully pronounced before continuant consonants. In this paper the durational changes of the vowel and the nasal as well as the formants of the vowel were analyzed in VNC sequences. The spreading coarticulatory effect in these sequences is supposed to originate from the continuant C (fricatives and approximants) that modifies the [n] articulation. The re...
متن کاملGestural overlap, place of articulation and speech rate - an x-ray investigation
This investigation deals with the production of consonant sequences in French, with particular focus on overlap of labial, apical, tongue-dorsum and velar gestures. X-ray and acoustic data are obtained for two speakers, at two speaking rates, normal-conversational and fast. Speech rate is varied in order to explore gestural overlapping possibilities, when places of articulation differ between p...
متن کاملCoarticulation Is Largely Planned *
Is coarticulation a reflection of planning an utterance or the automatic effect of producing speech? This question was examined by requiring speakers to begin reading nonsense aCV or abVCa strings (where C was fbi or IpI and V was Iii or lui) aloud before seeing the entire utterance. Those segments known before articulation began exerted normal anticipatory coarticulatory influences, while thos...
متن کاملTonal alignment, syllable structure and coarticulation: Toward an integrated model
The finding of consistent tone-segment alignment in many languages in recent research raises questions about the temporal organization of speech sounds in general. In this paper we explore the possibility that tonal alignment patterns can lead to the discovery of basic principles of temporal organization in speech. Based on a recent finding about the segmentability of approximants in English an...
متن کاملFrom MRI and acoustic data to articulatory synthesis: a case study of the lateral approximants in american English
Articulatory patterns of the lateral approximant /1/, both dark and light allophones, in American English were analyzed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electropalatography (EPG). Vocal tract lengths, area functions, and cavity volumes, were measured from the MR images, while EPG data were used for studying interand intra-speaker variabilities in lingua-palatal contact patterns. Aco...
